Katara and Sokka reunite with Bato, their old friend from the Southern Water Tribe. The name "Hakoda" is similar to the Malay word "nakhoda", which translates to "captain" when taken in the context of a commander of a ship. The pronunciation of Bato is similar to bateau, the French word for "boat". June is arm wrestling someone that looks like Ryu from Street Fighter. This episode makes several references to previous episodes in the season.
